Undergraduate Honors Research Program

Purpose: To allow outstanding undergraduates within the Department of Biology to perform research with an individual faculty member.

Selection: Students should apply to the Department in the winter quarter of their junior (next to last) year.  A minimum 3.0 GPA overall and in science courses is required.  Upon selection, the student will choose a sponsor from the Department.

Requirements: Three quarter sequence of Biology 401 which should be entitled Honors Reading (3 units) and Honors Thesis (4 units) will be required.  A written thesis is required and will be finished during the third quarter of work.

Supervision: Most supervision will derive directly from the sponsor.  A three person committee will evaluate the progress of each student at the end of each quarter.  Students not performing adequately can be dropped from the program at the request of this committee.  Students can request a change of sponsor during the first quarter of participation in the program.  A sponsor does not necessarily have to be in the department of the student's major.
