Thematic Foci
Ecology and Evolution:
- This group studies ecological and evolutionary processes and the consequences of interactions between organisms and their environment, and the biological and historical processes that have led to the observable diversity and distribution in organismal groups ranging from microbes to plants and animals. We also include special interests in biogeography and systematics.
Extremophile Biology:
- We study how viruses, Bacteria, Archaea, plants and animals thrive in "extreme" conditions in aquatic and terrestrial environments. See additional Center for Life in Extreme Environments WWW site
.
Environmental Genomics:
- We use modern molecular approaches to examine the response of organisms and populations to contrasting environmental conditions through variation in the genetic code and its patterns of expression.
Conservation Biology:
- We apply principles derived from ecology and evolutionary biology to the preservation of rare species, control of invasive species, experimental design and census techniques (short through longterm), and the maintenance of natural diversity at scales from the green spaces of our urban environments to the exurban and remote natural areas.
Physiology and Behavior:
- We focus on functional aspects of plants and animals from the level of the cell to organ systems and on the ecological and evolutionary consequences of behavior in animals. See additional WWW site:
Science, Education and Society:
- We are committed to community outreach and civic engagement through our activities in the education of teachers and the public on critical issues in biotechnology, environmental issues, science education, and bioethics. We also have faculty whose research focuses on ethics, equity, and the intersection between biology and society.
